ABCA1 Deficiency and Radiation Effects on Podocytes and Kidney Injury

Radiation therapy (RT), either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, impairs cholesterol efflux and contributes to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Currently, there are no treatment options for CKD other than renal replacement strategies such as dialysis or transplantation. However, off-target toxicity to the kidneys remains a significant clinical limitation. This study investigates the hypothesis that radiation induces lipid dysregulation by downregulating ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), leading to renal lipid accumulation and structural injury. We aim to establish the mechanistic role of ABCA1 in radiation-induced nephrotoxicity and assess whether ABCA1 deficiency worsens post-radiation kidney damage and lipid deposition.
